Cut roof carpentry and repair-led roof work

Roof carpentry covers both new timber work and careful repair-led roof work. Some jobs are clean structural carpentry from drawings. Others are older roofs where a localised timber failure needs careful inspection before anyone strips out more than necessary.

That repair judgement comes directly from Rob's old-building experience and is especially useful on older roofs.

Timber rafters, dormers and rooflights

A traditional cut roof is not just pieces of timber fixed together. Ridge boards, common rafters, hip rafters, valley rafters, jack rafters, purlins, collars, struts, wall plates, birdsmouth cuts, rafter centres and C16/C24 graded timber all need setting out correctly so the loads are carried properly.

Rooflights, dormers or attic use should be considered during the roof set-out, not added after tiling. The rooflight frame and finished reveal affect both structure and daylight into the room, especially where woodworm in joists needs dealing with before the roof is closed up.

Roof carpenter questions

How much does rafter replacement cost?

The cost of rafter replacement or roof timber work depends on access, scaffolding, covering removal, and whether the issue is isolated or part of a wider structural problem.

What does Rob need to know before recommending roof carpentry work?

For older buildings, Rob will want to know the moisture source as well as the timber condition before recommending work.
