The Counting House — Pontefract
Solid Oak Front Door & Frame
A complete front entrance replacement in solid oak, made as a heavy ledged and braced door with the presence of an original feature.
A proper entrance
The existing front door and frame were fully replaced in solid oak. On a building with the age and presence of The Counting House, the entrance could not feel thin, flat or shopfront-like.
The new door had to look as though it had always belonged there: substantial, traditional and in keeping with the restored town-centre frontage.
Ledged, braced and over 60mm thick
The door was made as a heavy ledged and braced oak door, finishing over 60mm thick. It had real weight, enough that lifting and handling it took several people.
That mass was part of the character. The thickness, boards, braces and frame all needed to work together so the finished door felt honest to the building, not decorative for the sake of it.
Fitting to old fabric
A new oak frame in an old opening requires care. The joinery has to be made accurately, but the final fitting has to respect the building as it is, not as a drawing might wish it to be.
The frame and door were set so the entrance looked settled and deliberate, with the oak doing the work visually and structurally.
The centrepiece
The finished front door became one of the centrepieces of The Counting House. It gives the building a strong oak entrance and sets the tone for the visible joinery inside.
It is new work, but it carries the right language: solid timber, traditional construction, good proportion and a finish that sits with the building's age.
