What is second fix carpentry?
If you’ve had building work quoted, you’ve probably seen the job split into “first fix” and “second fix” carpentry. It’s worth knowing what the second fix actually is, because it’s the part you live with every day.
First fix vs second fix
First fix is the carpentry that happens before the plasterer — floor joists, stud partitions, door linings, noggins, anything that gets covered up. Second fix is everything that goes on after the walls are plastered and decorated: the work that’s on show.
What second fix carpentry covers
- Hanging internal doors and fitting the ironmongery — handles, hinges, latches
- Skirting boards and architraves
- Window boards
- Staircase finishing — handrails, spindles, newel posts
- Built-in cupboards, shelving and boxing-in around pipes and boilers
Why it’s the part that shows
First fix is hidden in the walls and floors. Second fix is the bit you see and touch — so the standard of it is what makes a room feel properly finished or slightly off. Doors that close cleanly, mitres that meet tight on the architraves, skirting that sits flat to the wall with no gaps: that’s careful setting out and preparation, not luck. A rushed second fix is obvious, and it’s hard to hide.
That’s where time-served bench experience earns its keep — knowing how to deal with walls that aren’t square, floors that aren’t level, and openings that have moved over the years, so the finished work still looks right.
